Batfetishes

To help Myra figure out what her favorite fish is, here are some batfish.
The above batfish I was talking about (which I saw, unusually, swimming on the surface from a boat's deck in the Galapagos) is a member of the anglerfish family, Dibranchus atlanticus. It is normally a deep water bottom-dwelling fish, and nobody I was with had an explanation for what the thing was doing flopping around that night in the boat's running lights. They are so distinctive, however, that our identification was pretty certain.
The Flying Gurnard is another very distinctive batfish. It does, in fact, fly -- as much as any fish.

There is also a common aquarium fish called a batfish (a type of spadefish), as well as a Pacific stingray. Which is cheating, since stingrays are elasmobranchs like sharks, and we all know people really mean teleosts when they say fish. And probably other fish as well that I've never heard of.
This is the 1992 outfit Batman might wear to go collect some Dibranchus atlanticus -- Deep Dive Batman! Hand me down the shark repellent bat spray...

Last week Chuck Norris sat in for Sean Hannity as a co-host of Hannity & Colmes, which Wikipedia mistakenly describes as a "debate television program". While he clearly has at least as much political acumen as the regular co-hosts, I think his general intelligence and integrity might be overboard for the Fox "News" Channel's show. This is, after all, the man who repeatedly co-starred with Psychic Friends Network mouthpiece Dionne Warwick for most of a season of Walker, Texas Ranger!

John C. Wright's Blog (Recommendation)

CMD shared an item in his Google Reader feed today that led me to John C. Wright's blog. It is currently mostly filled with his thoughts on the difference between "great books" and "genre books", and whether there are any SF/Fantasy books that can be considered great. His blog is interesting reading, and I must thank CMD a second time (as he also gave me my first Wright book to read).

Wright is a worthwhile genre offer himself whose works I have enjoyed a lot recently, despite some sour Ayn Randish notes at the very end of his Everness dilogy. His books also contain nascent stirrings of some of the same misogynistic notes which Wright complains of in his blog about Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. Of course, I forgive those tendencies in Gene Wolfe, and I find I can forgive them so far in Wright.

Garbled Jenny

Does anyone here who subscribes to Jenny's Google Reader feed have the same problem I do, that it is unrenameable? It really, really wants to be called "Items shared by Jenny".
